Terms | Definitions |

Annunciation | The visit of the angel Gabriel to Mary to tell her that she would be the Mother of God and give birth to the Savior |
Apostle | One who is sent. The Twelve Apostles were chosen by Jesus Christ to spread his message throughout the world; they are the foundation upon which the church is built. |
Catholic | Universal. The Catholic Epistles are the epistles written to the whole world. |
Epistle | Letter. Much of the New Testament consists of epistles written to the individuals to whole congregations, or to the Church as whole. |
Gospel | Meaning "good news." Also: 1) Jesus' preaching; 2) the preaching about Jesus; and 3) the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. |
Pedagogue | A slave who acted as a private tutor for the master's children. Until the children reached adulthood. |
Q | A collection of sayings of Jesus. We don't whether it existed or not. |
Synoptic Gospels | Mathew, Mark, and Luke. They are called synoptic because because they have a similar point or view when constrasted with the Gospel of John. |
Anna | A prophetess who recognized the Messiah when Jesus was presented at the temple |
Augustus | First emperor of the Roman Empire. He established peace throughout the Mediterranean. |
Bethlehem | Town where Jesus was born. An ancestral home of David, Joseph had to go here to be "enrolled." |
Caesar | Title used by all of the roman emperors. |
Epiphany | The manifestation of Jesus as the Christ. |
Immaculate Conception | Virgin Mary was conceived without any stain of original sin. |
Incarnation | The coming of God in human form. Latin for "becoming flesh." |
Jesus Christ | The long-promised Anointed One. God the son in human form. Jesus was true God and Trie man. |
Simeon | A priest who recognized the Christ child when Jesus was presented at the Temple |
Son of David | A title that belongs not only to Solomon but also to Jesus Christ as the promised heir of the Davidic kingdom |
Court of the Gentiles | The outer court of the Temple in Jerusalem where Gentiles were permitted. |
Fast | To go without food. |
Lamb of God | A title given not only to the Passover sacrfice at the Exodus but also to Jesus Christ as the perfect sacrifice "who takes away the sins of the world." |
Leper | A person affected by the sickness known as leprosy. |
Money-changers | Businessmen who exchanged the ordinary Roman coins used in everyday business to the special Temple coinage used to pay the Temple tax. they notoriously took a certain percentage for themselves. |
The Twelve | The twelve apostles who Jesus chose to help him in his ministry. |
