To make comparisons of equality using adjectives or adverbs, use the following structure...

tan + (adjective/adverb) + como

Tan =

so or as

Como (not cómo) =

as

as tall as

tan alto como

as good as

tan bueno como

July is as hot as August

Julio es tan caluroso como agosto.

To form comparisons of equality with nouns, use the following formula...

tanto/a/os/as + noun + como

Tanto =

so much or as much (many)

as much money as

tanto dinero como

as much patience as

tanta paciencia como

as many book as

tantos libros como

as many pens as

tantas plumas como

In Seattle there are not as many sunny days as in Miami.

En Seattle no hay tantos dias soleados como en Miami.

When actions (not things) are being compared, and there is no adjective, use the following formula...

verb + tanto + como

In Boston it rains as much as in New York.

En Boston llueve tonto como en Nueva York.

cooks as much as

cocina tanto como

learn as much as

eprenden tanto como

To make comparisons of inequality, use the following structure...

más/menos + (adjective/adverb/noun) + que

que (not qué)

than

Spring is less cold than winter.

La primavera es menos frío que el invierno.

The Spanish superlative is formed using the following structure...

el/la/los/las + noun + más/menos + adjective + de...

Fall is the most boring season.

El otoño es la estacion más aburrida.

de... is only used when

the speaker wants to mention the group to which the noun belongs

July and August are the least pleasant months of the year.

Julio y agosto son las meses menos agradables del año.

Adjective - bueno (good) = Comparative -

mejor(es) (better)

Adjective - bueno (good) = Superlative -

el/la/los/las mejor(es) (the best)

Adjective - malo (bad) = Comparative -

peor(es) (worse)

Adjective - malo (bad) = Superlative -

el/la/los/las peor(es) (the worst)

Adjective - grande/viejo (big/old) = Comparative -

mayor(es) (bigger/older)

Adjective - grande/viejo (big/old) = Superlative

el/la/los/las mayor(es) (the biggest/oldest)

Adjective - pequeño/joven (small/young) = Comparative

menor(es) (smaller/younger)

Adjective - pequeño/joven (small/young) = Superlative

el/la/los/las menor(es) (the smallest/youngest)
