Definitions

Cuticle waxy protective layer of the leaf (prevents dehydration)
Upper Epidermis below cuticle and functions in protection
Palisade mesophyll cell column shaped cells containing many chloroplast. Found under the upper epidermis [most photosynthesis occurs]
Spongy mesophyll loosely packed, irregular shaped cells. surrounded by air spaces- allows CO2, O2 and water vapor to flow around cells
Vascular tissue made up of xylem and phloem found in the midrib and veins of the leaf
Stoma openings underneath the leaf. Allows gases to enter and exit the leaf (CO2, O2, H2O vapor)
Guard cells located on sides of the stoma and open and close to regulate the size of the stoma opening
Lower Epidermis single layer of dermis tissue underneath the leaf
Chloroplast site of photosynthesis
Photolysis split an H2O into H and O2
Xylem Carries H2O up the stems
Phloem carries sugars made by plant
Pigments traps light
Chlorophyll a pigment that traps light during photosynthesis
Grana are stacks of disk like structures in chloroplast (site of light reactions)
Thylakoids are individual disk in grana
