Definitions

Group A column or family on the periodic table
Period a row on the periodic table
ionization energy energy required to remove an electron from an atom
atomic radii the distance between the nucleus and the outer energy level in an atom
periodic law when elements are arranged by atomic numbers, elements with similar properites appear at regular intervals
valence electrons electrons in the outermost energy level in an atom
main-group elements element in groups 1-2 and 13-18 (s and p blocks)
alkali metals Group 1 metals; react with water to make alkaline solutions
alkaline earth metals Group 2 metals; found as compounds rather than as pure elements
halogens Group 17 - most reactive all nonmetal elements
noble gases Group 18 - have a full set of valence electrons. Atoms are very stable.
transition metals d block elements
lanthanides f block elements; similar to alkaline earth metals
actinides f block elements; elements are radioactive
electron shielding inner electrons shield the outermost electrons from the full attractive force of the nucleus
