Cardiovascular system

the body system that consists of the heart, blood vessels, and blood, and that carries needed substances to cells and carries waste products away from cells

Heart

the hollow muscular organ located behind the sternum and between the lungs

Valve

a structure in a hollow organ (like the heart) with a flap to insure one-way flow of fluid through it

Pacemaker

a specialized bit of heart tissue that controls the heartbeat

Artery

a blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the body

Vein

a blood vessel that carries blood from the capillaries toward the heart

Capillary

a tiny blood vessel where substances are exchanged between the blood and the body cells

Aorta

The largest artery in the body; it conducts freshly oxygenated blood from the heart to the tissues.
