Electoral college A body of people representing the states of the US, who formally cast votes for the election of the president and vice president
Executive privilege The ability, claimed by the president for the executive branch of the US government, of withholding information in the public interest
Impeachment A formal accusation against a public official by the lower house of a legislative body. It is merely an accusation and not a conviction.
Pocket veto One of two ways for a president to disapprove a bill sent to him by Congress. If the president does not sign the bill within ten days of his receiving it and Congress has adjourned within that time, the bill does not become law
Presidential coattails The tendency of lesser-known or weaker candidates to profit in an election by the presence on the ticket of a more popular candidate
25th amendment Deals with succession to the Presidency and establishes procedures both for filling a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, as well as responding to Presidential disabilities
22nd amendment Sets a term limit for the President of the United States.
Divided government A government in which one party controls the White House and another party controls both Houses of congress
Unified government A situation in which the presidency and both houses of Congress are controlled by the same political party
Veto One of two ways for a president to disapprove a bill sent to him by Congress. It must be sent to Congress within ten days after the president receives the bill
White House office The President's closest assiststants who have offices in the White House
Executive office of the president Members report directly to the president and perform staff services for him but are not located in the White House itself
Office of Management and Budget The executive agency that advises the President on the federal budget
Ad hoc structure A method of organizing a president's staff in which several task forces, committees, and informal groups of friends and advisers deal directly with the president
Pyramid structure A method of organizing a president's staff in which most presidential assistants report through a hierarchy to the president's chief of staff
National security council A body created in the US by Congress after World War II to advise the president on issues relating to national security in domestic, foreign, and military policy
Council of economic advisors An executive agency responsible for providing economic advice to the President
Executive agreement A formal agreement between the US president and the leaders of other nations that does not require Senate approval
Chief of staff Coordinator of the supporting staff and a primary aide to the President
War Powers Act Requires the President to notify Congress within 48 hours of committing armed forces to military action and forbids armed forces from remaining for more than 60 days, with a further 30 day withdrawal period, without an authorization of the use of military force or a declaration of war
