Alliteration The repetition of the same consonant
Assonance Repetition of the same vowel
Allusion indirect reference
Cliche Common saying
Connotation/Dictation Word choice the author uses that goes beyond its actual meaning, and creates a new one based off the context
Denotation/Literal Literal definition of a word
Figurative language Language used to create special thoughts or feeling (Ex. Personification, Metaphor, Simile)
Hyperbole Exaggeration
Imagery/Sensory Detail The 5 senses used to create an image
Irony The opposite of what you would expect/ The use of word to mean the exact opposite of its literal meaning
Metaphor Comparing to unlike things, without using the words like or as
Extended Metaphor A metaphor going into detail of the two comparisons being made
Onomatopoeia Using words to create sounds Ex. Boom!
Juxtaposition Putting to contrasting things next to each other, to create a new meaning
Personification Giving non-living things human attributes
Speaker The speaker of the poem
Repetition Repeating a sound, word, etc.
Rhyme & Rhyme Schemes The way the author rhymes, whether in certain stanzas, or one rhyme throughout a whole poem
Shifts The authors tone, and the way he changes to a different one
simile Comparing to unlike things using the words like or as
Stanza the lines of a poem
Symbolism Person, place or repetition of a person or something else

Tone The authors word choice and attitude about the poem
Theme The overall message throughout the poem
Comic Relief To ease the current situation by humor and jokes
Pun The use of a word or sentence in two ways
Double entendre The use of a pun in a sexual way
Oxymoron Saying the something small is big
Foreshadowing Giving out hints and clues to what will happen later in the novel
