# MATH Ch. 1- Variables, Expressions, & Integers †

## 24 terms

### numerical expression

consists of numbers and operations

### variable

a letter used to represent one or more numbers

### variable expression

consists of numbers, variables, and operations

### evaluate

substitute a number for each variable and solve the resulting numerical expression

### verbal model

describes a problem using words as labels and using math symbols to relate the words

### power

the reult of a repeated multiplication of the same factor

### base

the factor of the repeated multiplication

### exponent

shows the number of times the base is used as a factor

### order of operations

a set of rules on evaluating expressions involving more than one operation

### integer

a number w/o a fraction part

### negative integer

integer less than 0

### positive integer

integer greater than 0

### absolute value

the distance of a number from 0 on a number line

### opposites

2 numbers with the same absolute value but dif. signs

the opposite of a # (a+(-a)=0)

### coordinate plane

formed by the intersection of a horizontal number line called the x-axis and a vertical number line called the y-axis. The axes meet at a point.

### x- axis

the horizontal number line in a coordinate plane

### x- coordinate

the 1st number in an ordered pair representing a point in a coordinate plane

### y- axis

the vertical number line in a coordinate plane

### y- coordinate

the 2nd number in an ordered pair representing a point in a coordinate plane

### origin

the point (0,0) where the x- axis and y- axis meet in a coordinate plane

### ordered pair

a pair of numbers (x, y) that can be used to represent a point in a coordinate plane. The 1st # is the x- coordinate, and the 2nd # is the y- coordinate.
