Definitions

joint a junction, a union between two or more bones
temporomandibular joint the articulation of the mandible with the temporal bone
mandibular condyle the condyloid process of the mandible which has an articular surface when is a roughened area on the top surface.
glenoid fossa an oval depression in the temporal bone
articular eminence the raised portion of the temporal bone just anterior to the glenoid fossa
posterior tubercle the raised portion of the temporal bone just posterior to the glenoid fossa
articular disc a body of dense collagen tissue located between the mandibular condyle and the glenoid fossa. it is curved to fit between the bones and facilitates smooth motion.
synovial cavities a small sac-like compartments above and below the articular disc which is lined with epithelial tissue that secretes synovial fluid for the lubrication of the joint.
external lateral ligament attached to the zygomatic process of the temporal bone and extends onto mandible that lies outside of the joint and prevents lateral displacement of the mandible
internal lateral ligament attaches from spine of sphenoid bone to mandible and inserts onto lingula and this is an important landmark for local anesthesia
stylomandibular ligament extends from styloid process of temporal bone to the angle of the ramus
articular capsule a thick and fibrous connective tissue on the outside with a layer of loose connective tissue and rich network of blood vessels that completely encloses the joint
temporomandibular ligament a thickened part of capsule between the eminence and lateral part of condyle that prevents excessive retraction and lateral displacement
retrodiscal pad vascular and nerve tissue behind disc
elastic lamina a layer of tissue that runs from the posterior upper part of disc and inserts into posterior upper end of capsule and attaches to temporal bone.
collagenous lamina a layer of tissue that runs from posterior lower part of disc and attaches to posterior neck of condyle
hinge action (rotational) the first movement as the jaw begins to open first few mm's
gliding action the second movement that occurs between the disc and temporal bone
