cuticle

waxy, protective layer secreted by cells onto the surface of a plant

cellulose

chemical compound plants can make out of sugar

vascular plant

have tubelike structures that carry water, nutrients, and other substances throughout the plant

nonvascular plant

do not have that tube like structure

rhizoid

threadlike structures that anchor seedless nonvascular plants where they grow

pioneer species

organisms that are the first to grow in new or disturbed areas

stomata

allow carbon dioxide, water, and O2 to enter and exit the leaf

guard cell

open and close the stomata

xylem

xylem tissue is made up of hollow, tubular cells that are stacked one on top of the other to form a structure called a vessel

phloem

is a plant tissue also made up of tubular cells that are stacked to form structures called tubes

cambium

tissue that produces most of the new xylem and phloem cells

gymnosperm

vascular plants that produce seeds that are not protected by fruit

angiosperm

vascular plant that flowers and produces fruits with one or more seeds

monocot

have one cotyledon inside their seeds

dicot

have two cotyledon inside their seeds
