Purpose of a processor. Its is the brains of the computer, Manages program executions, Fetches instruction from main memory and preforms calculations.
Parts of a processor. It is made up of the ALU ( Arithmetic logic unit), Control Unit and Registers.
Simple five box diagram. it consists of input devices, processor, main memory, output devices, and backing storage
Differences between main memory and backing storage. Main memory is inside the cpu and is made up of RAM and ROM, stores programs and data currently being executed by the computer. Backing storage is connected to the cpu and is used to permanently store data and program files.
RAM and ROM. RAM is Random Access Memory and stores files and data currently being worked on, it also loose its data when the computer is turned off.
ROM is Read Only Memory and cant be written to, the data it stores is written at manufacture, keeps data when turn off.
Uses of embedded, palmtop, laptop, desktop and mainframe computers.Embedded-Contains hardware and software to carry out the machines functions.
Palmtop-Fits in hand, Handwritten text can be changed using OCR.
Laptop-Light,Same functions as a desktop but more expensive.
Desktop-Popular for business and home, Cheaper than laptop.
Mainframe-Powerful,expensive,used by large organisations to store large amounts of data.
Clock speed. Used to measure the computers performance, how fast the processor is fetching and executing the instructions, its measured in Hz.
