personification

giving human qualities to something that is not human

metaphor

comparing unlike things by saying one thing IS something else

simile

comparing unlike things using the words LIKE or AS

hyperbole

exaggeration, saying that something is bigger, faster, or better than it really is

haiku

a Japanese form of poetry, consisting of three unrhymed lines of five, seven, and five syllables

cinquain

a short poem consisting of five, usually unrhymed lines containing, respectively, two, four, six, eight, and two syllables.

rhythm

the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of poetry

limerick

the repetition of sounds at the ends of words

alliteration

a series of words that begin with the same consonant sound

assonance

repeating of vowel sounds within a word
