functional text features pieces of informational such as Table of Contents, Glossary, and/or Index which allows a reader to know where to go to learn more about a topic.
glossary An alphabetical list of key terms found in the back of a book; A mini-dictionary
table of contents list of the major parts or chapters of book. It also identifies the page numbers for each section/chapter.
index An alphabetical list of the key names, terms, events, and topics found in a text. Each entry identifies the page numbers where the name, term, event, or topic is mentioned in the text.
bibliography list of sources the author or authors used to get their information contained in the book.
graphic text features features that assist a reader in understanding a text. Graphic features include charts, diagrams, tables, and pictures

subheading breaks a chapter or book into smaller parts and tells what each smaller section of the book or chapter is about

print styles (bold, italics, colored text)- authors will use bolded, colored, or italicized words to draw the reader's attention to important information
captions words under a picture or illustration explaining what that picture or illustration is showing
focus question questions that guide a person's research. These small questions often become subtopics in a brochure, report, or research paper.
gist statement gist statement-main ideas, or summary, or a text. (20-25 words)
research to conduct an investigation about a certain topic and report your findings either in writing or speaking

citing sources when a researcher looks for information and then reports that information in a brochure, research paper or other way, that researcher must give credit to the people, books, websites, interviews or any other media used in obtaining that information.
