stress subjective feeling produced by events that are uncontrollable or threatening
major life events events that require people to make major adjustments in their lives
daily hassles minor, but can be chronic and repetitive
acute stress results from the sudden onset of demands. experienced as tension headaches, emotional upsets, gastrointestinal disturbances, feelings of agitation, and pressure
episodic acute stress refers to repeated episodes of acute stress
traumatic stress a massive instance of acute stress, effects can reverberate for years or a lifetime (associated with PTSD)
chronic stress stress that does not end. can result in serious systemic illnesses such as diabetes, decreased immune system functioning, or cardiovascular disease
primary appraisal person perceives event as threatening
secondary appraisal person concludes that he/she does not have the resources to cope with the demands of the threatening event
problem focused coping using thoughts and behaviors to manage or solve the underlying cause of the stress
emotion focused coping attempting to alleviate stress by avoiding or ignoring a stressor and attending to emotional needs related to one's stress reaction
emotional inhibition A personality trait involving a tendency to deny feelings of anger, anxiety, or fear
disclosure telling someone about a private aspect of oneself
bereavement state of sorrow over the death or departure of a loved one
oscillation Moves between confronting the loss and moving toward "recovery"
positive reappraisal cognitive process whereby a person focuses on the good in what is happening or has happened
rumination mulling over a problem over and over without finding a solution
dispositional optimism expectation that good events will be plentiful in the future, and that bad events will be rare in the future
