Skeletal System a body system made up of bones, joints and connective tissue
Marrow a soft tissue in the center of some bones
Joint The point at which two bones meet
Hinge joint A type of joint that allows movement in one direction
Gliding Joint A type of joint that allows bones to slide over eachother
Pivot Joint A type of joint that allows movement with limited rotation
Ball and Socket joint A type of joint that allows complete rotation in all directions
Cartilage a strong flexible, gel like tissue that cushions you joints
Tendons tough bands of tissue that attch you muscles to bones
Ligaments Cord-like tissues that connect the bones in each joint
Fracture a break in a bone caused by an injury
Dislocation occurs when a bone is pushed out of its joint
Sprain stretching or twisting of ligments in a joint
Overuse Injuries happen over time, used too much. EX: Shin splint
Scoliosis a disorder where the spine curves to one side in a S or C shape
Osteoporosis a condition characterized by brittle bones
Muscular systen the group of structures that give your body parts the power to move
Skeletal muscles The muscles attached to bones that enable you to move
Smooth muscles The muscles found in organs, blood vessles and glands
Cardiac muscles the muscles found only in the walls of you heart
Circulatory System A group of organs and tissues that move essential supplies to body cells and remove thier waste products
Cell respiration The process in whihc the body's cells are nourished and energized
Arteries blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart to other parts of the body
Veins Blood vessles that carry blood from the body back to the heart
Capillaries tiny blood vessels that connect the veins and arteries to the body's cells
Hypertension high blood pressure
Heart attack blockage of blood flow to the heart
Stroke results from blood clots that block vessles to the brain
Arteriosclerosis A condition where arteries harden
Anemia abnormally low level of hemoglobin
Leukemia a type of cancer in which large amounts of abnormal cells are produced
Respitory System A system that consists of organs that supply the body with constant oxygen and rid the body of carbon dioxcide
Respiration the exchange of gases between your body and the air
External Respiration the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the blood and the air in the lungs
Internal Respiraiton The exchange of gases between the blood and the cells of the body
Bronchi The main openings throgh which air enters the lungs
Alveoli tiny air sacs in the lungs where carbon dioxisw ia exchanged with oxygen
diaphragm dome shaped muscle that separates the chest from the abdomen
Asthma a serious chronic condition that causes tiny air passages in the respiratory system to become narrow
Air Quality Index measure of ozone, sulfer, carbon minoxide, and fine particles close to the ground
