Declaration of IndependenceJuly 4th 1776, America ecame a new nation (even though not reconized by Britian yet) This did not bind them together but made each state a independent "country". Most were only loyal to their state, not their country
Magna Carta1215, made it so the government had to follow the same rules as the people did.
English Bill of Rights1689, this gave people a stronger voice in government and gave the monarchs less power. Happened as a result of the Glorious Revolution
Petition of Right1628, this said No Taxation without Representation and also said that no quatering soldiers during peace time
John LockeEnlightenment thinker. He wrote the social contract that stated if a monarch broke any of the natural rights (unalienable rights) that they should be removed from office
Baron de MontesquieuEnlightenment thinker. He wanted seperation of power in order to protect the rights of the governed
John RousseauEnlightenment thinker. Said that the people should give up certain individual rights for the public good

Confederation CongressThis stated that each state had one vote in the Congress, they had limeted powers but could make coins, borrow money, negotiate and make treaties, settle conflicts, and ask for soldiers. But under no circumstance could they ask for money for troops
Land Ordinance of 1785This method surveyed and divided up property. (TOWNSHIP-36sq mi, TOWNSHIP DIVIDED UP INTO 36 LOTS-640 acres each-1 for school, 4 for veterens, the rest was for the public)
Northwest Ordinance of 1787This created: a system for bringing new states into the Union, and bill of rights that said pulic must be educated in this area, no slavery, created Northwest territory
