oligarchcy | This is the system whereby a small group of people control the government. They get their power from wealth, social position, military strength, or a combination of these. |
direct democracy | In this system, citizens are required to vote on issues individually. Only in small societies is this type of democracy efficient. |
socialism | This is an economic system in which the government owns the means of production: the factories, farms, and machinery. This type also provides services such as education, welfare, and healthcare to its people. |
communism | This government makes all decisions about production and the distribution of goods. People living under this government have very limited choices concerning the careers they persue or the kinds of products they may buy. It is quite similar to communism. |
capitalism | This is an economic system that encourages private ownership of property and the means of production. The opportunity to earn a profit is the motive for individuals to enter into business. |
the Constitution | This document contains the highest authority of law in the United States. |
