Nubia and Kush Notes

Modern day Egypt and Sudan
- Nubia was located south of Egypt and its southern border was around where the White Nile and the Blue Nile converged, around 5,000 years ago, area below 1st cataract
- First Kush settled along the Aswan down to Khartoum in the south of the Nile River
- The political boundary between Nubia and Egypt was made at the first cataract
- Nubia depended on the Nile for water but the landscape was rocky and hard to farm
- It had great mineral wealth
- Mines had gold, granite, copper, and precious stones that could be traded
- Were excellent potters and traded with many cultures
- Were also excellent archers, so good Egyptians hired them for their army
- Nubia was located on a major trade route from Egypt and Central Africa to Asia(traded with Egypt)
- Egypt took over after it was founded
- When the Old Kingdom collapsed,
o Egyptians withdrew
o Kerma became capital for Kush people
- When the Middle Kingdom collapsed Kush expanded to control all of Nubia and Egypt by teaming up with the Hyksos
At the Beginning of the New Kingdom they took over Kush and destroyed Kerma the capital, From about 1500 BC to 900 BC
- Napata was the new capital of Kush and in 750 BC Piankhi rose to power, took Egypt
- Piankhi was known as a compassionate ruler
- Where the White and Blue Nile converged
- Moved capital to Meroe
- By forests with wood and animals
- Abundant Iron resources, most profitable resource
- Later Kushite had female rulers
- Overtime the timber kept getting fewer surpluses and the economy failed, slowly showing the decline of the Kushite Empire
- In A.D. 350 they were taken over by Aksum located in Ethiopia
- Kush's culture changed in many ways as its civilization developed
- Even though it was mostly Egyptian because of its location near Egypt, it became more independent as Kush moved to Meroe and away from Egypt
- Kush rulers built pyramids in Meroe(with accent)
- They had bodies mummified
- They didn't dress like Egyptians though
- Adopted slightly modified version of hieroglyphics
- They moved the capital to Meroe(accent)
- Culture became less Egyptian after this

-Their new culture in Meroe was known as Meroitic
-As they advanced to their own culture they made hieroglyphics into a more complex script
- Four armed lion god named Apedemak

-in Meroitic, rulers were regarded as demigods and were buried in pyramid like tombs (similar to those of Egypt)


After Kushite empire(make sure you have new kingdom revolted and then Piankhi retook Nubia and then took over Egypt)
