folliculitis (staphalococcal) Caused by Staph. aureus. invasion from skin to follicle, aka pimples

Chickenpox varicella-zoster. resp. infect, skin (blisters). Treatment: 1995 vaccine (attenuated). Shingles- dormant in cells until immunity declines
Smallpox Transmission - enters throat/resp.tract
Warts human papillomavirus. Attack skin and mucus membranes
Dermatomycosis Ringworm - highly contagious. Treat with topical anti-fungal ointments, oral griseofluvin
Subcutaneous mycosis caused by Sporotrichosis- fungus from soil enters a wound, ulcers form and progress to lymph system. Treatment with potassium iodine or Amphotericin B
Systemic (deep) Mycosis Inhaled spores in dust and soil.
Found in spec. geographic areas (southeast)
Candidiasis opport. in mouth, intestine, vagina.
Vaginitis discharge, itching
Thrush newborns, white patches on mucus membranes or mouth
Nail lesions thick and crack
Opthalmia neonatorum newborn conjunctivitis from mother's Neisseria gonorrhea or Chlamydia trachomatis
Bacterial Conjunctivitis (pink eye) Extremely contagious
Trachoma leading cause of preventable blindness
Chlamydia trachmatis causes corneal scarring due to eyelashes pointing inwards
Gas gangrene Clostridium perfringens spores germinate in poorly oxygenated tissue where they ferment muscle sugar and produce gas that kills tissue. Treatment: remove dead tissue
Cat Scratch Fever pus filled nodule. Caused by organisms carried by cats
Animal Bites Pasteurella multocida transmitted by dogs/cats bites and scratches
Treat bites with penicillin
