Indictment A formal charge against someone accused of a crime
Bail Money a defendant gives the court as a promise to return for the next trial
Warrant A piece of document given by the court to law enforcers giving authority to search, seizure and arrest
Grand Larceny Theft of items worth more than a certain amount
Probable Cause A good reason to believe someone committed a crime
Burglary the forcible or illegal entry into a home or other property with the intent to steal
Misdemeanor a less serious crime like a traffic violation
Felony A serious crime such as murder or rape
Status Offender A youth who is judged to be beyond the control of their guardian
Delinquent A juvenile who is found guilty of a crime
Probation A sentence where a prisoner goes free but is under the supervision of a court official
Capital Punishment The defendant punishment
Rehabilitation Reforming criminals and returning them to society as law abiding citizens
Deterrence Discouraging a certain behavior by punishment
Corrections methods used to punish law breakers
Sentence a punishment given to a person convicted of a crime

Own Recognizance The legal responsibility between one's own behavior
Fraud Taking someone's money through dishonesty
Embezzlement Taking money for one's own use after it has been entrusted to them

Victimless Crime Crimes that hurt the person doing them and are morally corrupt
Arson destroying property by setting fire to it
Vandalism The willful destruction of property
Robbery Theft accompanied by the threat of force
Petty Larceny Stealing something worth less than a certain amount
Parole Letting an inmate serve the rest of their sentence outside of prison
Plea Bargain Pleading guilty in exchange for a lesser charge
Arraignment A court hearing in which the defendant is formally charged with a crime and enter the plea guilty or not guilty
