Reformation A reform movement of Western Christianity.
Methods A way of doing something.
Indulgences A relaxation of penalties for sins people had committed. Buying them reduced time in purgatory.
Purgatory A place where souls went before they went to heaven. Souls were punished for sins there.
Desiderius Erasmus Dutch priest and writer; Believed the church's problem were caused by lazy clergy and that they ignored their duties to lead easy lives.
Martin Luther Priest who nailed a list of complaints, the Ninety-Five Theses, about the church to a church door in Whittenburg, Germany; Was excommunicated after appearing before a diet; Credited with starting the Reformation.
Diet A council of nobles and church officials.
Protestants People who sided with Luther and protested against the church.
William Tyndale English professor; Believed everybody should be able to read the Bible; Translated the Bible into English and angered English clergy who had him executed.
John Calvin Believed that God had a plan for everybody before they were born and nothing they did could change it; Made political and religious leader of Geneva, Switzerland.
King Henry VIII Asked pope to end his marriage, but the pope refused; He broke away from the church and became the head of the Church of England.
Catholic Reformation The effort to reform the Catholic Church from within; Counter-Reformation.
Spanish Inquisition Groups ordered by the Spanish monarchs to hunt down and punished Muslims, Jews, and later, Protestants.
Saint Ignatius of Loyola Spanish noble who founded the Society of Jesus; The group was disciplined as soldiers.
The Jesuits A religious order created to serve the pope and the church.
Angela Merici Founded the Ursuline Order; They taught girls and believed education was the key to strengthening the Catholic Church.
The Council of Trent A council of church leaders that came together to discuss, debate, and eventually reform Catholic teachings.
Huguenots French Protestants.
Edict of Nantes Granted religious freedom in most of France; Issued by King henry IV.
Thirty Years' War A long series of wars that involved many of the countries of Europe.
Agreement A decision reached by two or more people or groups.
Congregation Church assembly.
Federalism The sharing of power between local governments and a strong central government.
