Skeletal System -gives the body shape
-protects the internal organs
-works with the muscles to move the body
spine made of small bones that run down the back and keep it straight (sometimes called the backbone)
ribs bones that attach to the spine and curve around to protect the heart and lungs
skull the bony part of the head that protects the brain
cartilage -flexible material that cushions the bones where they meet
-it is softer than bones
ligaments connects bone to cartilage and holds the joints together
hinge joint allows bones to move back and forth
(ex: knee or elbow)
pivot joint allows bones to rotate around a point
(ex: head moving on neck)
ball and socket joint allows movement in many directions
(ex: hip or shoulder)
muscular system body system made of muscle that makes the body parts move
skeletal muscle Muscles that move your bones. They can pull the bones, but not push. Skeletal muscles must work in pairs.
(ex: biceps and triceps of the arm)
cardiac muscle muscle found only in the heart
smooth muscle -found in the blood vessels and many organs of the body
-movements of these muscles are involuntary (they move without you having to think about them)
