Esophagus The long straight tube that connects the pharynx to the stomach
Pancreas The organ that lies behind the stomach and that makes digestive enzymes and hormones that regulate sugar levels
Liver Organ that makes bile (liquid that helps digestion), stores and filters blood, and stores excess sugars
Gallbladder A sac-shaped organ that stores bile produced by the liver
Kidneys Pair of organs that that filter water and wastes from the blood and that excrete products as urine
Nephron The microscopic filters in the kidney that remove wastes from the blood
Central Nervous System The part of the nervous system that includes the brain and the spinal cord
Peripheral Nervous System All of the parts of the nervous system except for the brain and the spinal cord
Neuron A nerve cell that is specialized to transfer messages in the form of fast-moving electrical energy called impulses
Nerve A collection of nerve fibers (axons) through which impulses travel between the CNS and the other parts of the body
Gland A group of cells (tissue) that make special chemicals for the body.
Hormones Chemical messengers made by the endorine glands that regulate (control) body functions by causing changes in other cells or tissues.
