### random variable

a rule of association that associates a number to each outcome of a probability experiment

### discrete random variable

A random variable that assumes countable values

### continuous random variable

A random variable that can assume any value conatined in one or more intervals

### probability distribution of a random variable

a ( ) could be a formula a table or a graph that gives the probability associated with each x value. conditions on p(x) are that (1) p(x)≥0 and (2) ∑ p(x)=1 where the sum is over all possible x values

### cumulative distribution

a frequency distribution showing the total number of observations in each class and all lower-ranked classes

### expected value of an R.V.

average value the R.V. assumes μ

### Bernoulli trial

an occurrence in which exactly one of two possible outcomes can occur

### binomial distribution

a theoretical distribution of the number of successes in a finite set of independent trials with a constant probability of success

### geometric distribution

P(X=x) = (1-p)^(x-1) (p) fixed number of independent trials, identical independent random trials, each with probability p of success. # of trials is random variable
