Gametes | Reproductive cells |
Germ Cells | Cells that divide into gametes through meiosis |
Somatic Cell | Cells that make up the body and are not reproductive cells that divide through mitosis |
Zygote | When 2 gametes fuse together |
210 | The number of different types of cells that exist |
Spermatogonium | The germ cell for a male |
Oogonium | The germ cell for a female |
Interphase | The phase in between each phase in which the cell spends most of its life |
Mitosis | The process of pulling apart cells |
Prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase | The 4 phases of mitosis |
Cytokinesis | The actual splitting of cell |
Prophase | First and longest phase in mitosis in which the chromatin coils form visible chromosomes, the nucleus disappears and the centrioles begin to migrate to opposite ends of the cell |
Metaphase | The second phase of mitosis where chromosomes become attached to spindle fibers by their centromeres, chromosomes are pulled by the spindle fibers and begin to line up in the middle, each sister chromatid is attached to its own spindle fiber and one sister chromatid spindle fiber extends to one pole and the other extends to the opposite pole |
Anaphase | The third phase in mitosis in which the chromosomes start to get pulled apart, the cell will bulge in and the chromosomes separate |
Telophase | The final phase in mitosis where the spindle fibers begin to break down, the nucleolus appears, a new nuclear envelope forms around each set of chromosomes and finally, a new double membrane begins to form between the two nuclei |
