Global Warming | The gradual increase of average global temperature |
Greenhouse Effect | The warming of the surface of the planet and lower atmosphere. Occurs when water vapor, carbon dioxide, and other gases absorb and reradiate thermal energy. |
Air Pollution | The contamination of the atmosphere by the introduction of pollutants from human and natural sources. |
Ozone | A form of oxygen that has three oxygen atoms in each molecule instead of the usual two. |
Particulate Matter | tiny particles of liquid or solid matter |
Point-Source pollutants | Pollutants that are released from a single source |
Nonpoint-source pollutants | Pollutants that come from several sources |
Acid Precipritation | Rain, sleet, or snow that contains a high concentration of acids |
Air Quality | A measurement of pollutants in the air |
Primary Pollutants | Pollutants that are released directly into the atmosphere |
Secondary pollutants | Pollutants that are not directly released into the atmosphere. They are formed when primary pollutants mix in the atmosphere. |
