Boolean Search Using AND, NOT and OR to help focus an internet search
Search Engine Use this when you know what you are looking for and can describe it with keword(s) or phrases
Directory Search Use this when you need an overview of a subject or you don't know exactly what you are looking for
Metasearch Engine Use this to quickly run a complete search and need to compare results from different search engines
Bookmark Way to save the location of a website for later use
Wildcard search Using the * symbol to stand in for a character, letter or word to help broaden a search
Quotation marks Put quotation marks around the search terms to find only websites with the exact wording
Tilde Use the tilde (~) to search for synonyms of your keyword search
Google "I'm Feeling Lucky Button" Skips the list of hits and goes directly to the first site in the list
Plus, minus A way to narrow or widen the focus of your research
Hit list The list of sites that are suggested by the search tool you are using
Bibliography List of resources used by the author. This can be a good place to find additional web resources
Lower case Usually, only use lower case letters in a search
link: Type this before the URL to find pages that contain a link to the page you are currently viewing
title: Type this before your keyword to help locate sites where you keyword is in the title to narrow your focus
