PhotosynthesisThe process when plants and other producers use sunlight energy to turn carbon dioxide and water into sugar (food).
Food ChainA series of organisms that rely on each other for their food and survival.
Food WebA system of food chains that are inter-connected.
Energy FlowLight energy from the sun is turned into food energy by producers and this energy is passed up the food chain as organisms eat their food.
InterdependentOrganisms that depend on each other for survival
ProducerAn organism that uses sunlight energy to make food (glucose) from carbon dioxide and water.
ConsumerAn organism that eats other organisms.
Primary ConsumerOrganisms that eat only producers (also called herbivores).
Secondary ConsumerOrganisms that eat producers and other consumers (also called omnivores).
Top PredatorAnimals (usually carnivores) at the top of the food web
DecomposersOrganisms that break down dead organisms into nutrients.
BioaccumulationWhen chemicals in an ecosystem build up in the bodies of organisms. Usually organisms at the top of the food web have the largest amount.
