| Photosynthesis | The process when plants and other producers use sunlight energy to turn carbon dioxide and water into sugar (food). |
| Food Chain | A series of organisms that rely on each other for their food and survival. |
| Food Web | A system of food chains that are inter-connected. |
| Energy Flow | Light energy from the sun is turned into food energy by producers and this energy is passed up the food chain as organisms eat their food. |
| Interdependent | Organisms that depend on each other for survival |
| Producer | An organism that uses sunlight energy to make food (glucose) from carbon dioxide and water. |
| Consumer | An organism that eats other organisms. |
| Primary Consumer | Organisms that eat only producers (also called herbivores). |
| Secondary Consumer | Organisms that eat producers and other consumers (also called omnivores). |
| Top Predator | Animals (usually carnivores) at the top of the food web |
| Decomposers | Organisms that break down dead organisms into nutrients. |
| Bioaccumulation | When chemicals in an ecosystem build up in the bodies of organisms. Usually organisms at the top of the food web have the largest amount. |
