TermDefinition
hyoid boneupper anchor of larynx, lower anchor of tongue, attachment point for jaw muscles
thyroid cartilage ("like a shield")housing of vocal folds
epiglottis (cartilage)protects the airway for swallowing
cricoid cartilage ("like a ring")base of larynx
arytenoid cartilage (2) ("ladle/pitcher/funnel shaped")posterior attachment of vocal folds
trachea (cartilage)airway
Describe a cycle of vocal fold vibration, with info about muscular and aerodynamic events1) gentle closing of glottis by laryngeal muscles; 2) air pressure grows beneath glottis until it causes the glottis to start opening (from bottom to top); 3) as glottis opens and air escapes, velocity of the air increases and pressure decreases; 4) the decreasing pressure becomes insufficient to hold the glottis open and it closes again (from bottom to top). This cycle repeats at the frequency of the pitch being sung. The motion = a mucosal wave.
