theme the main idea in a piece of litterature
imply to suggest a theme indirectly
infer to find the hidden themes that the author implies

irony when words convey the opposite meaning
paradox a staement that seems self-contradictory, yet expresses a possible truth
rhetoric a comment/question not to be answered aloud, but thought about
autobiography when someone writes about their own life/experiances
biography when someone writes about another person's life/experiances
coming of age when someone begins to take on the responsibilities of adulthood
loss of innocence to have done something wrong/advanced, so you must deal with the consequences. No longer an innocent child!
adversity an unfortunate circumstance or event
epiphany a great and sudden realization/understanding
destiny the predetermined, inevitable, irresistable course of action or events
prose ordinary form of spoken or written language
verse one of the lines of a poem/stanza
blank verse unrhymed verse

simile a comparison of two things using 'like' or 'as'
metaphor a comparison of two things not using 'like' or 'as'

personification giving human characteristics to inanimate objects
rhyme to be similar in sound, especially with respect to the last syllable
individuality to be yourself, unique
conformity to try to be like everybody else (fit in)
yawp a barbarious, thunderous, yell that releases emotion

symbols a sign or figure of some sort that referances to something else
thesis the main statement of something that you are trying to prove
