Superficial venous drainage is in what fascia? Superficial fascia
Posterior auricular vein (OP) O - a plexus of veins in scalp behind ear
P - descends across upper part of SCM where is unites with retromandibular v
Retromandibular vein (OPD) O - formed in upper portion of parotid gland by confluens of superficial temporal & maxillary vv. Receives branches from pterygoid plexus of vv
P - descends post to ramus of mandible thru parotid gland
D - gives rise to ant descending communication which joins facial v below angle of mandible
Ext jugular vein formed by retromandibular veins joining posterior auricular vein
Pterygoid plexus of veins important where? important between temporalis & lat pterygoid muscles and between 2 pterygoid mm & around maxillary a
Pterygoid plexus of veins (connections) with facial vein via cavernous sinus & inferior/sup ophthalmic veins & retromandibular vein. Direct connections with cavernous sinus
External jugular vein (PD) P - crosses SCM perpendicularly, descends toward middle of clavicle, pierces investing layer of cervical fascia 2 cm above clavicle in post triangle.
D - Ends in subclavian vein
Valves of external jugular vein Subclavian vein, 4 cm above
Other veins external jugular receives from shoulder transverse cervical, suprascapular veins
Anterior jugular vein (OD) O - begins near hyoid bone by confluens of small veins of submental & submandibular regions
D - external jugular vein (no valves)
Anterior jugular vein (P, tissue) descends near medial line in subcutaneous CT. About 3cm above manubrium the vein perforates superficial layer of cervical fascia. Here it unites with ant jugular of other side in suprasternal region. Turns laterally, passes close behind sternocleidomastoid m. Empties into external jugular
Facial vein (P) follows --- artery thru face. Begins with supraorbital & supratrochlear vv, has communication around orbit with sup & inf ophthalmic vv in orbit
Superior ophthalmic vein (PD) P - along roof of orbit thru sup orbital fissure
D - cavernous sinus
Inferior ophthalmic vein (PD) P - along floor of orbit thru sup orbital fissure
D - pterygoid plexus of veins, then cavernous sinus
Where does facial vein communicate with retromandibular vein? below angle of the mandible
Occipital vein (O) Begins as plexus of veins in occipital region of scalp
Occipital vein communication, branches Communication with post auricular vein. Branches that descend with --- artery which pierce trapezius muscle & empty into a plexus of veins in suboccipital triangle.
Occipital veins (D) vertebral veins & deep cervical veins
Internal jugular vein (fact, OP) largest vein of head & neck.
O - collects blood from brain, superficial parts of face, neck. Begins at jugular foramen in skull where there is a dilatation called the superior bulb.
P - descends in carotid sheath with int & common carotid and vagus
Superior bulb Dilation in internal jugular vein at jugular foramen
Pharyngeal veins (OD) O - arise from a venous plexus on wall of pharynx
D - internal jugular at angle of mandible
Common facial vein (OD) O - continuation of facial vein at ant margin of SCM after it receives communication from a retromandibular vein
D - internal jugular at level of hyoid
Lingual vein (OD) O - arises from veins on dorsum, sides, and under surface of tongue
D - empties into internal jugular at level of origin of --- artery from ex carotid artery
Superior thyroid vein (D) empties into internal jugular above thyroid cartilage
Inferior thyroid vein (PD) P - descends on surface of trachea
D - drains directly into R/L brachiocephalic veins behind manubrium
Thyroid ima vein when R & L inferior thryoid veins unite to form a single vein, which empties into L brachiocephalic vein
Inferior jugular bulb Just above its termination into internal jugular, has a dilation called inferior bulb. Also has a single bicuspid valve to prevent upward flow of blood into internal jugular
Inferior bulb Inferior dilation on inferior jugular bulb
Brachiocephalic vein behind sternoclavicular joint the internal jugular & subclavian veins for R/L --- . Drains into superior vena cava.
