My assessment was not just about finding and selecting a quote that really touch and moved me but also one in which I could draw a mental image of its significance in terms of the real life of indigenous people in Australia. | The poem I chose is called "Last of his tribe" written by Oodgeroo otherwise known as Kath Walker. |
This poem expresses the true sadness, loss and hurt of many Indigenous people. It covers almost everything that they have had to go through in Australia's history. | It represents how we displaced their people and made their religions and beliefs die- out. It shows us how we imprisoned lives and in turn made them miserable through loss of connection to traditions, people and ultimately land. |
The poem "Last of his tribe" is all about injustice, isolation, inequality, shame, loss, lack of assimilation, feelings of failure, and the fight for something from long ago. | The colour that I have chosen for this poem is orange as it is a well know aboriginal colour that depicts around the land that they come from. The colours in my artwork have a real range between dark orange and various skin colours. |
. I have used various tones of the orange background to indicate the dominance of the white population on one hand and to link the Indigenous person to his ancestors around the edges of the canvas. The salience is the Indigenous person in the middle of the painting. | Although black is usually associated with death there is also something bold and distinct about it. Black is a highly saturated colour whilst the whiter tones of the other characters are unsaturated. The Indigenious person is represented as the soul black figure. |
| The whole canvas has been painted. This emphasis' the pressure felt by the indigenous character in the centre. The outlines are subtle as they are the outlines of the masses, and whilst there is a natural, peaceful element to the painting, the harsh reality of the character and his spear in the centre creates a level of anxiousness. | The Indigenous figures in the painting are arranged in both a horizontal and vertical manner. The vertical dimension highlights the imprisonment of the Indigenous character. The horizontal dimension highlights how he is embraced and surrounded by the legacy of his history, people and customs. |
This poem expresses the tragic effects of the policy of assimilation and how Indigenous people felt isolated by changing their ways of life. This poem truly shows us a feeling of loss to all beliefs and Indigenous history and a stinging of pain in foreign places such as the Salvation Army Home. | This poem tells us how hard it was for Indigenous people being forced to live in different conditions and change everything about them because of where they now lived. The tone of the poem is sad and affects not only the way you read it but also the level of empathy and sympathy felt for the subject of the poem. |
| The main idea of the poem is to point out that the old ways were going to be replaced by the new foreign ways. All that the Indigenous people knew and had were now to be lost. This poem shows us how much worse Indigenous people thought their life was now and how they never forget their clans, their land, their old scenes and ways. | My artwork directly relates to the quote " Displaced person in your own country". As well known all indigenous people have a strong affinity with the land. They believe their ancestors and tribes form part of the earth and land. |
To accurately reflect this one either sees the figure surrounded by the foreign people or alternatively see the faded figures of the subjects ancestors forming part of the dark orange background. | ... |
