Isoniazid Treatment of TB; inhibits growth. ADEs are peripheral neuropathy and hepatitis.
Rifampin First line drug for TB. Destroys bacteria. Discolor body fluids. Can't give with HIV drugs. Lots of drug interactions
Pyridium Treats urinary pain. Discolors urine orange/red. Doesn't have antibacterial activity but makes symptoms of UTI better
Acyclovir For herpex and shingles. Can cause reversible nephrotoxicity (increased BUN and CK); neurotoxic esp in dialysis pts. Wear gloves. Safe during pregnancy
NasalCrom Mast cell stabilizer for allergic rhinitis. Best for prevention and takes a week or 2 to work. Not used for urgent need.
Sudafed Help with stuffiness in allergic rhinitis. Activates alpha1 adrenergic receptors to vasoconstrict-->reduce blood flow to nose-->reduce swelling. SNS stimulant (hyper states)
Atrovent Used to improve lung function through bronchodilation. Approved for COPD and used off label for asthma maintenance. Decreases mucous production. Will not provide rescue relief
Robitussin Suppresses cough reflex by elevating CNS threshold. Opioid derivative. Avoid in pts that need cough reflex. Subject to abuse
Guifenesin/Mucinex Relief of resp conditions that have a dry, nonproductive cough. Produces more productive cough. Decreases viscocity. Teach pts if cough lasts >7 days see dr
Acetylcysteine/Mucomyst Breaks up thick tenacious sputum-->watery. Rotten egg smell. Antidote for tylenol. Works fast as nebulizer. Not given in pts with esophageal varices, PUD. Causes burning in upper airway
Inhaled Cromolyn Sodium Asthma anti-inflammatory drug. Safest of all asthma meds. Tolerance doesn't develop. Works on mast cells-prevent from degranulation. Take daily even if ok. Not for acute attack. Can be taken 15 min before x for x-induced asthma
Albuterol/Proventil Rapid acting Beta 2 agonist used as rescue drug for acute asthma. Short acting. Promotes bronchodilation. Combo therapy best way to go with asthma pts. Mild systemic effects (Hyper)
Servent Long acting beta 2 agonist for maintenance of asthma. In dry powder form. Not first line drug and don't take a monotherapy-not effective (need combo).
Theophylline First line asthma maintenance drug-decreased in use due to new safer drugs. CNS stimulation. Narrow therapeutic range (10-20)
Epoetin alfa Treatment of anemia assoc w/ acute renal failure. ^ RBC production. Can cause hyper states; can lead to anaphylaxis. Get baseline Hgb twice a week until target met. Too high-cardio risk. Don't shake
Neumega Prevention of severe thrombocytopenia and reduce need for platelet transfusions in cancer pts. Can have severe allergic reaction(anaphylaxis); don't give to pts with HF. Don't shake.
Sandimmune Adjunct treatment to prevent transplant rejections-prevent graft vs host disease. Can cause nephro and hepatotoxicity. Monitor blood tests. High fat diet in hospital; low fat diet at home.
Prednisone Anti-inflammatory, anti-allergies, immunosuppressant, inhaled for mod/severe asthma. Osteoporosis with long term use. Caution in DM-watch blood sugars. Taper off. Take with milk or food
Prilosec PPI-Treat PUD (H Pylori in combo w/ antibiotics); GERD. Effects persist til new enzymes produced. ^ risk of pneumonia with ^ gastric pH. Take just before eating. Don't crush/chew
Zantac Treat active duodenal or benign ulcers; GERD. With or w/o food. Blocks histamine action to inhibit gastric acid secretion. Smoking dec efficacy. Monitor trough levels in renal/liver pts before giving dose; pH/pneumonia; GI bleeding
Reglan Diabetic gastroparesis; GERD; prevent N/V post op during chemo. Increases peristalsis and tone-->gastric emptying. Can cause sedation, diarrhea; EPS side effects can happen
Lomotil (Diphenoxylate HCL w/ Atropine) For diarrhea only. Similar to narcotic so atropine given to make people not want to take in excess. Slows motility, prolong transit time so stool more formed
