### Data

any information you can collect

### Statistics

branch of mathematics that allows us to organize and examine information to make it work for us

### Facts

concrete and unchanging information you can receive

### Idea

an understanding of the information you have received

### Categorical Data

data you can count; also called LABEL or QUALITATIVE data

### Numerical Data

data you can measure and do math on; also called MEASUREMENT or QUANTITATIVE data

### Mean

the average; add them all up and divide by how many there are; balance point; x bar; AVERAGE

### Median

value that is in the middle when arranged in size order; average of the in the middle if there is an even number of data values; MIDDLE

### Mode

value that occurs the most or has the highest frequency;
MOST

### Bar graph

graph used to show categorical data; bars show how many times each label occured; bars don't touch

### Histogram

graph used to show measurement data; bars show frequency within intervals; bars touch

### Analyze

see what something is or how it works by breaking it down and examining its parts

### Dotplot

each data item is shown as a dot above its value on a number line

### Frequency

number of times a value appears in a data set

### Stem and Leaf Plot

Graph that groups data together that are the same or differ only in their final digit

### Range

Difference of lowest from highest

### Five Number Summary

minimum, first quartile, median, third quartile, maximum

### Outlier

data values that are far away from all the others;a value that "does not fit in well" with the rest of the data; greater than 1.5*IQR from median

### IQR

Inter-Quartile Range = third quartile - first quartile

### Deviation

how spread data values are from center

### Standard Deviation

square root of the variance; how spread out data is from the mean

### Box Plot

Visual representation of the 5 number summary

### Variable

a symbol used to represent any one of a collection of numbers

### Absolute Value

distance that a number is from zero; never negative

### Variance

sum of the squares of the deviations
