Definitions

Fiction Written from the author's imagination. Most frequently associated w/ novels and short stories.
Nonfiction Writing that presents and explains ideas or that tells about real people, places, objects, or events. Examples: letters, autobiographies, biographies, speeches, articles, essays, memos, reports.
Genre The division or type of literature based on the text's characteristics and purpose.
Disseminated To pass down over generations.
Realistic Fiction Drawn from the imagination of the author and is very believable. Represents the burdens, struggles, joys, and happenings of everyday life.
Historical Fiction Author's imagination is weaved around past events, characters, settings, time periods.
Science Fiction Author's imagination is weaved around technology, the future, space travel or the impossible.
Adventure Fiction The main characters go on an adventure that ultimately leads to self discovery.
Fantasy Fiction Imagination of the author breaks free from reality. Story takes place in a nonexistent and unreal world. Unreal characters.
Mystery Fiction Characters are asked to solve a crime or puzzle or to discover and expose a secret.
Thriller Fiction Suspense is the driving force for the plot. Characters are usually placed in danger or cause danger.
Dialect The way a person speaks based on where he or she is from
Myth Represents culture and explains nature/creation
Tall Tale Represents culture in a humorous way, with hyperbole
