organelle A tiny sell structure that carries out a specific function within the cell.
cell wall A rigid layer of nonliving material that surrounds the cells of plants and some other organisms.
cell membrane It controls what substances come into and out of a cell.
nucleus It directs all of the cell's activities, including reproduction.
cytoplasm It includes a gel-like fluid in which many different organelles are found.
mitochondria Most of the cell's energy is produced within these rod-shaped organelles.
endoplasmic reticulum A network of passageways that carries materials from one part of the cell to another.
ribosome These small structures produce proteins and may be attached to the endoplasmic reticulum, or they may float in the cytoplasm.
Golgi body or Golgi complex It receives the materials from the endoplasmic reticulum and sends them to other parts of the cell. They also release materials outside the cell.
chloroplast These organelles capture energy from sunlight and use it to produce food for the cell.
vacuole Some animal cells have these and the store the food, water, waste, and other materials.
lysosome These small organelles contain chemicals that break down food particles and worn-out cell parts.
