Body cavities and membranes of the human body

axial portion

includes the head, neck, and trunk

appendicular portion

includes the upper and lower limbs

dorsal cavity

located within the axial portion of the body; includes the cranial cavity and vertebral canal

ventral cavity

located with the axial portion of the body; includes the thoracic cavity and the abdominopelvic cavity

cranial cavity

located in the dorsal cavity; houses the brain

vertebral canal

also called the spinal cavity; located in the dorsal cavity; contains the spinal cord

diaphragm

muscles that separates the thoracic from the abdominopelvic cavity

mediastinum

separates the thorax into two compartments that contain the right and left lungs
