Fundamental Order of Connecticut | 1639. First constitution. Established a regime democratically controlled by the "substantial" citizens. |
Dominion of New England | 1686. New England, New York, New Jersey. consolidated. More efficient administration of English Navigation Laws, The Dominion ended in 1688 when James II was dethroned. |
Virginia House of Burgesses | 1619. First elected legislative assembly in the New World established in Virginia. Served as an early model of elected government in the New World. |
Mayflower Compact | 1620. The first agreement for self-government in America. It was signed by the 41 men on the Mayflower and set up a government for the Plymouth colony. |
Town Meetings | They would decide important questions and choose a group of "selectmen" who governed until the next meeting. Only adult males were permitted to participate. |
Pennsylvania Privy Council | Penn won a crucial victory in the Privy Council in his long contest with Lord Baltimore over ownership of the "lower counties," now known as Delaware. |
Maryland Assembly | Legislative (law making) body for the state of Maryland. Passed Act of Toleration in 1649. |
Maryland Act of Toleration | 1649 - Ordered by Lord Baltimore after a Protestant was made governor of Maryland at the demand of the colony's large Protestant population. The act guaranteed religious freedom to all Christians. |
Half-way Covenant | A Puritan church document; In 1662, it allowed partial membership rights to persons not yet converted into the Puritan church; It lessened the difference between the "elect" and "damned". |
Pennsylvania Charter of Priveleges | King Charles II gave William Penn the authority to establish a religious colony. |
Treaty of Tordesialles | 1494. Divided the "New World" between Portugal and Spain. |
Bacon's Rebellion | 1676 - Bacon and other Virginia settlers were angry at Governor Berkley for not taking action against agressive Indians. The frontiersmen formed an army which defeated the Indians and then marched on Jamestown and burned the city. The rebellion ended suddenly when Bacon died of an illness. |
Stono Rebellion | 1739. 50+ South Carolina slaves revolted and tried to march to Spanish Florida. |
The Great Migration | The movement of more than 20,000 people from England to Massachusetts between 1629 and 1640. |
Enclosure Movement | This was the way that the English landowners would now organize their land so that the farmers would become more productive in their work |

Glorious Revolution | In this bloodless revolution, the English Parliament and William and Mary agreed to overthrow James II for the sake of Protestantism. This led to a constitutional monarchy and the drafting of the English Bill of Rights. |
