pustule | vesicles filled with purulent exudate (pus) (blisterform) |
papule | raised lesion with no fluid inside, less than 5mm in diameter (solid lesion) |
nodule | raised lesion with no fluid inside, 5mm-2cm in diameter (solid lesion) |
tumor | elevated, solid and deep lesion more than 2cm (solid lesion) |
plaque | broad, slightly raised area witha flat top; looks pasted on (solid lesion) |
sessile | if a lesion's attatchment has a broad base as wide at the lesion itself |
pedunculated | lesions have a narrow pedicle, or stalk-like base of attatchment |
ulcer | depressed lesion that extends through the epithelium into the dermis (depressed) |
erosion | depressed lesion which does not extend through the dermis. AKA: abrasion (depressed) |
wheal | serum-filled papule or plaque |
scar | permanent mark from wound |
sinus | a recess, cavity, or dilated tract |
fluctuant | a lesion that conveys a wave-like motion usually owing to a liquid content |
soft | lesion composed of cells without much fibrous connective tissue |
firm | a lesion that is harder than adjacent mucosa and has a higher content of fibrous connective tissue |
indurated | hardness primarily as a result of an increase in the number of epithelial cells |
hard | a lesion that contains bone or other calcified material |
mobile | a lesion which can freely move upon palpation |
smooth | deep lesions that push up and stretch the surface tissues |
papillary | rough surface resembling small nodules or elevated projections |
crusted | a hard outer layer of dried serum, pus, or blood |
cratered | centrally depressed like a bowl |
corrugated | ripples or washboard-like (corrugated cardboard) |
fissured | consisting of many deep crevices |
pseudomembrane | a false membrane that covers the surface of the lesion and can be wiped off |
