 superior | a body part is above another part or is closer to the head |
| inferior | a body part is below another body part or is toward the feet |
| anterior | toward the front |
| posterior | toward the back |
| medial | closer to the imaginary central line that divides the body |
| lateral | toward the side with respect to the imaginary midline |
| bilateral | paired structures (one is on each side) |
| ipsilateral | refers to structures on the same side |
| contralateral | refers to structures on the opposite side |
| proximal | a body part that is closer to a point of attachment to the trunk than another body part |
| distal | a body part that is farther from a point of attachment to the trunk than another body part |
| superficial | situated near the surface |
| peripheral | outward or near the surface |
| deep | parts that are more internal than superficial parts |
