Definitions

Somatic Mesoderm Wall of the body cavity
Splanchnic Mesoderm Visceral, internal organs (innervated by the autonomic nervous system). Surrounds the gut tube.
Paraxial Mesoderm Longitudinal blocks on either side of the notochord that give rise to the axial skeleton and skeletal muscle.
Intermediate Mesoderm Gives rise to the urogenital system
Lateral Plate Mesoderm Gives rise to connective tissue, the skeleton of the limbs, smooth muscle/connective tissue of viscera and blood vessels
Sclerotome Ventromedial portion of the somite closest to the notochord. Cells migrate around neural tube and notochord to form the vertebrae.
Dermatome Part of the somite which gives rise to the dermis. Farthest from the notochord. Skin = epidermis (surface ectoderm) + dermis (somite)
Myotome Part of the somite which gives rise to the muscles. Medium distance from the notochord.
Intervertebral disks What structure does the notochord give rise to in the spinal column?
Interplay of Hox 5, 6, 9 and 10 What determines the fate of each developing vertebrae?
Epimere Gives rise to epaxial muscles, those deep in the back
Hypomere Gives rise to hypaxial muscles, those of lateral and ventral body wall
Dorsal Ramus Innervates epaxial muscle. Carries information out.
Ventral Ramus Innervates hypaxial muscle. Carries information out.
Caudal Dysplasia Total or partial failure of the lower vertebrae to develop with associated abnormalities of the lower extremities, spine, kidneys, GI tract, urogenital tracts etc.
The Coelom between the Somatic and Splanchnic Mesoderm What will give rise to the pelvic, thoracic and abdominal cavities?
A small portion of the Yolk Sac What becomes pinched off inside the developing gut tube by the folding somatic and splanchnic mesoderm?
