| shadow | can be dark side of hero or person, unexpressed or hidden side of their nature. can also be the good side of the villian. they can also be people who agree with your protagonist's goals, but disagree on how they must be achieved. has lots of energy and emotion, and can be an outside force that can either be defeated or face with. |

| hunting group of companions | buffoon-like character that remains loyal to hero and keeps him company in darkest of times, though they don't actually have a hand in quest or tasks themselves |
| loyal retainers | hired servants of hero and can even perform heroic deeds themselves |
| friendly beast | creatures through loyalty to hero demonstrate that nature favors hero and loves him or her. also points to hero's essential goodness |
| scapegoat | character's public punishment, exile, death that relieves hero or community or consequence. sacrifices him or herself for public good |
| father son conflict | theme usually presents early, has to be resolved in order for hero to experience transformation |
