descriptive | nonfiction that uses details to create mental pictures that trigger your senses |
memoir | a record of a memory of an event by a person who has experienced it or personally observed it |
almanac | a yearly publication that contains statistical information and general information such as weather, calendars, etc. |
autobiography | The life story of a real person narrated by himself or herself |
biography | a written history of a person's life written by another person |
journal | an account of day to day events; a record of experiences, ideas, or reflections for private use |
review | a critical description or analysis of a movie or book which contains its plot, characters, strengths and weaknesses |

friendly letter | a letter that transmits personal information and which can have either a formal or informal tone |
business letter | a letter of formal tone which acts as a record, request, or gives information necessary to conduct business. |

body | the part of a letter that contains its information |
closing | the word or phrase at the end of a letter's body that ends the letter |
formal language | language that is used to show respect for age, authority or to address people you do not know well or at all |
informal language | language you use with close friends and family |
signature | the part of a letter that appears directly beneath the closing. It identifies the writer |
R.S.V.P. | an abbreviation at the end of a letter of invitation which tells the letter recipient to respond either by accepting or declining the invitation |

folio line | the line at the top of a newspaper page that identifies the department of the articles on that page as editorials, news, sports, or features |
feature articles | articles in a newspaper that are generally written to entertain as well as inform |
brochure | a pamphlet or booklet that promotes a product or gives information about a product |
news story | an article in a newspaper that gives a summary account of an event and includes information of when, where, why, how and what. |
photo story | A feature story that is contained within one long caption and explains the photo above it |
editorial | a persuasive essay in a newspaper that appears on the opinion pages |
