ecology | the study of the interactions between organisms and the living and nonliving compnents of their environment |
interdependence | the quality of organisms that allows them to interact with other organisms in their surroundings and with the nonliving portion of their environment |
ecological models | models that are used to represent or describe the components of an ecological system |
biosphere | broadest, most inclusive level of organization; the thin volume of Earth and its atmosphere that supports life; all organisms are found within biosphere |
ecosystem | second largest level of organization of ecology which includes all of the organisms and the nonliving environment found in a particular place |
community | instead of including nonliving factors, it just includes the living species of organisms; all the interacting organisms living in an area |
population | all the memebers of a species that live in one place at one time |
biotic factors | living components of the environment |
abiotic factors | nonliving factors; physical and chemical characteristics of of the environment |
habitat | the place where an organism lives |
tolerance curve | a graph of performance versus values of an environmental variable, such as temperature |
acclimation | the adjusting of the tolerance of some organisms to abiotic factors |
conformers | organisms that do not regulate their internal conditions; they change as their external environment changes |
regulators | organisms that use energy to control some of their internal conditions |
dormancy | a long-term strategy to escape unfavorable environmental conditions like winter or drought in which the organism enters a state of reduced activity |
migration | another strategy to escape unfavorable environmental conditions in which the organism moves to a more favorable habitat |
niche | the specific role, or way of life, of a species within its environment |
