Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome AIDS...a syndrome caused by the human immunodeficiency virus HIV, that renders immune cells ineffective, permitting opportunistic infections, malignancies, and neurologic diseases to develop; transmitted sexually or through contaminated blood
Allergen substance that causes an allergic reaction
Anaphylaxis a severe response to an allergen in which the symptoms develop quickly, and without help, the patient can die within a few minutes.
Autoimmune disorder any of a large group of diseases characterized by a condition in which the immune system produces antibodies against its own tissues
Cytomegalovirus a group of large herpes-type viruses that cause a variety of diseases
Cytotoxic drug any drug that has a toxic effect on cells
Hemolytic destroying worn-out red blood cells and releasing their hemoglobin for reuse
Hodgkin's lymphoma distinguished from other lymphomas by the presence of large, cancerous lymphocytes known as Reed-Sternberg cells
Immunoglobulins Blind with specific antigens in the antigen-antibody response. The five primary types are secreted by plasma cells, are also known as antibodies.
Immunotherapy therapy designed to produce immunity to a disease or to enhance resistance by the immune system
Infectious mononucleosis An infection caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) that is characterized by fever, a sore throat, and enlarged lymph nodes
Interferon a family of proteins produced by the T cells whose specialty is fighting viruses by slowing or stopping their multiplication
Lymphadenitis inflammation of lymph nodes
Lymphangioma a benign tumor formed by an abnormal collection of lymphatic vessels due to a congenital malformation of the lymphatic system.
Lymphocytes The specialized white blood cells that play an important role in immune reactions.
Malaria Caused by a parasite that lives in certain masquitoes that is transferred to humans by the birs of an infected mosquito. Symptoms could include fever, shaking childds, headache, muscles aches, and tiredness.
Metastasis the spreading of a disease to another part of the body
Myosarcoma A malignant tumor derived from muscle tissue
Rickettsia Small bacterium that lives in lice, fleas, ticks, and mites..Rocky Mountain Fever is caused by this bacterium
Spirochetes spiral-shaped bacteria that have flexible walls and are capable of movement...Lyme disease
