Backspace a character that causes the cursor to move backward
bandwidth the amoutn of data that can be transmitted in fixed amount of time, measured in bits or bytes per second
cd-rom Compact Disc-Read Only Memory
flash drive a small, portable flash memory card that plugs into a computer's USB port and acts like a portable hard drive
CPU Central Processing Unit-the brains of a computer

Dvd+R a write once, read only disc which can be read by DVD video players and computer DVD-rom drives

hacker an increasingly negative term referring to individuals who gain unauthorized access to computer systems for the purpose of stealing or corrupting data
hardcopy a printed copy of a document
hardware machinery and equipment (CPU's, keyboards, printers, modems)
Home Tab/ribbon a character on the computer keyboard that moves the cursor to the top of the screen/page
Insert mode/overtype allow the editor to insert all characters typed to the right of the insertion point
menu a list of commands or options from which you can choose
network a group of two or more computer systems linked together
operating system the most important program that runs on a compter; it is a group of interdependent items that intersact regularly to perform a task

softcopy/digital copy a file that exists only on the compter or disk drive

task bar a desktop tool bar that allows you to perfom tasks such as swtching between open windows and starting new applications
technique a particular way of doing something
virus a program or piece of code that is loaded onto your computer without your knowledge or consent and that runs against your wishes usually causing damage to files
