equation | A mathematical sentence stating that two expressions are equal. |
algebra | A branch of mathematics using symbols rather than numbers. |
algebraic expression | A mathematical phrase that has at least one variable and one operation. Example: 10 X n or 10n |
sum | The answer to an addition problem |
addend | The numbers being added. |
difference | The answer to subtraction problem. |
minuend | The number from which another number is being subtracted. |
subtrahend | The number being subtracted from the minuend. |
product | The answer to a multiplication problem. |
factor | A number that divides another number without a remainder. |
quotient | The answer in a division problem. Example: 45/9 = 5, 5 is the quotient. |
divisor | The number used to divide another number. Example: In 12/3, 3 is the divisor. |
dividend | The number being divided by another number. Example: In 12/3, 12 is the dividend. |
axis | Either of two lines drawn perpendicular to each other in a graph. These serve as the "X" and "Y" of the coordinate plane. |
