Definitions

photosynthesis the process by which plants, algae, and some bacteria use sunlight, CO2, and H2O to produce glucose & oxygen
autotrophs organisms that perform photosynthesis
cellular respiration the process by which cells produce energy by breaking down glucose
ATP molecule that acts as the main energy source for cell processes
pigments A substance that absorbs certain wavelengths (colors) of light and commonly reflects all others
chlorophyll green pigment found in plants that absorbs sunlight and uses its energy to synthesize glucose from CO2 and H2O
chloroplasts part of the plant where photosynthesis takes place
respiration The exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between living cells and their enviornment
Anaerobic Respiration metabolic process that does not require the presence of oxygen
Aerobic Respiration metabolic process that does require the presence oxygen
Cellular Respiration the breaking down of food (organic compounds) to release energy
Glycolysis process of breaking down glucose into pyruvic acid
Krebs Cycle part of an aerobic process that breaks down pyruvic acid into electron carriers
Calvin Cycle cycle in photosynthesis in which carbon dioxide is converted into glucose
fermentation the breakdown of glucose by enzymes, bacteria, and yeasts, or mold in the absence of oxygen
Electron Transport System The remaining energy from glucose from the Krebs cycle comes to this cycle as electron carriers and bindswith Hydrogen to make ATP and H2O
ATP Synthase enzyme that can synthesize adenosine triphosphate (ATP) from adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and inorganic phosphate by using some form of energy
