Emigrate

to move from a country. People who leave a country are called emigrants.

Immigrate

to move to a country. People who move to a bother country are called immigrants. USA has lots of immigrants.

Migration streams

the constant flow of migrants from one country into another country. The largest migration stream into the United States today is from Mexico.

Refugee

someone who seeks safety by going to another country. Refugees may be escaping political unrest or war. Or they may fear being attacked because of their beliefs.

Push factors

1. Political-fear government and fear persecution
2. Environmental-drought, human activity-nuclear plant causing poisoned soil.
3. Economic: poor and jobs or no opportunity

Pull factors

1. Family-unit divided families
2. Education: Leave so children can attend better schools
3.Quality of Life: American Dream, better jobs, better healthcare, housing, etc.

How does Immigration effect USA?

1. Jobs-take jobs away because willing to work for less, many unskilled,
2. Taxes-more tax revenue but more services needed such as health care, 2nd language classes
3. Cultural,-Bring new food, culture to share, make use more exciting

How does Emigration Affect Homelands Left Behind?

Brain drain-talent leaves because of better pay
Remittances: Money comes back to homeland
Divided families
Political Impact: Once here, some refugees work hard to bring democracy to their homeland

How does Immigration Affects USA: Economic Impact (Jobs)

-Take labor jobs no one wants like farm labor, house cleaners, cab drivers.
-Some highly educated and work as professors, scientists, athletes, start business, etc.
Some native born Americans say Immigrants take jobs away from them.

How Immigration Affects USA Economy-Taxes

-More tax money comes into government to support libraries, schools, etc.
-More services needed for healthcare, language classes, etc.
-some states, the cost of immigration to is too high and tax payers resent the costs.

How does Immigration affect Neighborhoods, food and holidays?

-Introduce different ways from all over the world.
-Immigrants move to neighborhoods like their own country-makes US more exciting (China Town, Little Italy)
-Bring new food, holidays like bagels, Chinese New Year,
-Results in a rich mix of ideas, sights and sounds.
-Helps us learn about the world (Sudan example)

How does Emmigration Affect Homelands: Brain Drain and gain

-Homeland looses skilled people that get jobs in other countries (Brain drain).
-Most Emigrants send money home to family so family is better off -Remittances
-Brain gain is when the Emigrants get educated in the new country and return home.

How does Emigration Affect Homelands: Divided Families and community improvement

-Emigrants leave families and some never return home
-Money sent home helps to better care for aging parents or pays for education back home.
-Some send money home to build schools that help the entire community.

How does Emigration have a political impact on Homeland?

-Many leave to avoid political unrest and work hard for democracy in homeland.

Why are some regions "push" more migrants than they pull?

Poverty and conflict:
Example is Africa (Poverty has grown worse and more wars) Caused Africans to flee to refugee camps or more peaceful countries.

Why might other regions "pull" more migrants than they "push"

Emigrants are attracted to developed regions where they can find jobs, schools, healthcare,etc. and near homeland is best. North Africans move to Europe and Latin Americans more to USA or Canada

push factor

factor, such as unemployment or the lack of freedom of speech, that makes people want to leave their country and move to another one

Pull Factor

something that encourages people to move to a new place.
