Personification A figure of speech in which an animal, an object, a force of nature, or an idea is given human characteristics.
Imagery Descriptive language that appeals to one or more of the five senses: sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell.
Hyperbole A figure of speech that uses exaggeration to express strong emotion, make a point, or evoke humor.
Metaphor A figure of speech that makes a comparison between two seemingly unlike things. Unlike a simile, it implies an underlying similarity between the two and does not use the word like or as.
Simile A figure of speech that uses like or as to compare seemingly unlike things.
Onomatopoeia The use of a word or phrase that imitates or suggests the sound of what it describes.
Alliteration The repetition of consonant sounds, generally at the beginning of words. It can be uses to emphasize woods, reinforce meanings, or create a musical effect.
